Indications
A thorough diagnosis of the patient’s conditions determines if cataract surgery is required or not. The surgery is indicated based on several factors. This procedure aims at treating cataracts. However, having cataracts is not the ultimate criterion to undergo this surgery. If a cataract does not cause any interference with an individual’s routine activities or does not cause a blurry vision, then the surgery is not mandatory.
But, if a person’s cataract causes difficulty in carrying out everyday tasks because of blurred vision, then surgery may be indicated after proper diagnosis.
Pre-procedure Guidelines
If your doctor has recommended you to get this surgery, you can expect the following set of steps.
Lens: For the replacement of the clouded lens, doctors use an intraocular lens. These lenses ultimately become a part of your eye. Your doctor will discuss the same with you before surgery.
Tests: You would have to undergo an ultrasound test one week before the surgery. This test is done to measure the size of the eye so that one can decide upon an artificial lens (intraocular lens).
Eyedrops: Your healthcare team may provide you with some eyedrops for the prevention of infections before the surgery.
What happens during procedure
It is a small surgery that is performed on an outpatient basis. At first, the doctor would give you eye drops to dilate the pupil. You will also be given anesthesia to lessen the pain intensity of the procedure.
This surgery can be performed in two ways-
Phacoemulsification - It is a modern technique used most commonly for cataract surgeries. After the surgeon gives you anesthesia, he/she will make an incision in your cornea. The size of the incision will be very small. Through this incision, the surgeon will insert an ultrasound probe. This probe is used to transmit waves that break the clouded lens (cataract) and remove the fragments of the lens.
Extracapsular cataract extraction - The surgeon makes a large incision in the eye. This incision is used to remove the cataract completely. The surgeon then stitches the incision back together.
Both the techniques are succeeded with the implantation of the artificial lens into the lens capsule.
Post-procedure guidelines
You can expect the following steps after your surgery:
Post-surgery, you may continue to have blurry vision for some time.
You can expect to have a brighter colorful view because of the new lens.
There may be some discomfort in the eye.
You may have to wear an eyepatch on the day of surgery.
You will be given instructions on your medicines and eyedrops.
