If you have been recommended by your doctor to undergo Coronary angiography, you must practice the following steps before the procedure:

• Fasting – For ERCP, your doctor must be able to view your organs properly. Hence, it is advised to go for the procedure with an empty stomach. Fasting for 8 – 12 hours before the procedure is generally required.

• Medications – It is important to notify your doctor about the medicines you take beforehand. If you are on any blood thinners like aspirin or ibuprofen, you may be asked to discontinue it temporarily. If you are consuming any nutritional supplements, tell your doctor about it.

• Allergies – Notify your doctor about all the various drug allergies you have.

The doctor will then pass a catheter into a small opening between the bile ducts and the intestine to inject a contrasting dye. The dye will help identify the narrowings, blockages or scars present in the bile ducts or pancreas. 

The abnormalities can be treated during ERCP using an X-Ray video, which is known as fluoroscopy. Your doctor may insert a stent through the endoscope or dissolve your gallstones during ERCP depending on your condition.

Once the procedure is complete the endoscope is removed and you will be transferred to another room until the sedative has worn off.

After the procedure is completed, the following steps need to be followed by you to avoid any further complications:

• Since it is an outpatient procedure, you will be discharged from the hospital the same day.

• You will require someone to take you home as the sedative might not have worn off completely.

• The bloating from the gas passed during endoscopy might remain for a day or two. Consult your doctor if it causes any discomfort.

• Do only light activity. Avoid any strenuous exercise for the next couple of days.

• Avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen or any other blood thinners without consulting the doctor

• Consult your doctor immediately if you experience severe abdominal pain.

• Drink lots of fluids. It will help you to flush out the dye.

• Consult your doctor to know what to eat after the procedure. Usually, a very light meal is advised.

ERCP is a safe and sound procedure if performed by qualified experts. However, certain risks are associated with this procedure. The following is a set of such complications that may be generated from this procedure:

• Excessive bleeding

• Inflammation of pancreas

• Sore throat due to endoscopy

• Puncturing of the bile duct or bowel wall

• Infection of the bile duct

• Perforation of the intestine

• Depressed breathing

• Irregular heartbeat or heart attack (rare chance)
