Before opting for this surgery, you should expect the following to happen:

Tests: Your doctor would need the reports for some tests before performing surgery. These tests include blood tests, ECG, breathing tests, echocardiogram, and chest X-ray. 

Fasting: You would be asked not to eat or drink anything after midnight on the day of surgery.

Medical History: Your doctor would record your past medical history.

General examination: Your blood pressure, pulse, temperature and more would also be taken before the surgery.

This operation has two types: sentinel lymph nodes biopsy (small amount of nodes are removed) and axillary lymph node dissection (multiple nodes are removed).

After your surgery is complete, the following steps would be followed:

• The nurse will check your blood pressure, pulse, and breathing. 

• A bandage would be placed on the surgery site

• You may feel pain and numbness in your underarm area

• You would be instructed by your doctors and nurses on how to care for yourself after the surgery

• You should discuss all your doubts with your healthcare team 

• You would be prescribed medicines 

• You should shower on the next day of surgery
