If you have been recommended by your doctor to undergo the procedure, the following steps should be followed to ensure that you are well prepared for your surgery.

Medications: Discuss all your medications with your doctor as some medications may need to be stopped days before the procedure. The doctor may ask to discontinue certain medicines and supplements that would induce bleeding during the procedure.

Fasting: Depending on the anesthesia, the doctor might ask you to stop ingestion of solid food, 8 hours before the procedure.

Guidelines for the night before the: 

Wear loose and comfortable clothing, especially if you have knee surgery, so that you can dress easily after the surgery.

Arrange for a ride home. You won't be allowed to drive after the surgery, so make sure you have adequate means to get back home.

In the procedure, you will first change into a patient gown with the assistance of the nursing staff. In the operation theatre, you will lie in proper posture and turn to your back or your side. Then, for proper positioning of the joint, a Positioning device will be used, and a tourniquet may be used to reduce blood loss. This might also increase visibility inside the joint. 

A sterile fluid might also be administered into the incision to expand the area to increase visibility. Additional incisions might also be made that would allow the surgeon to cut, grasp and grind at the site as might be required for joint repair.

In general, the procedure in the above surgeries is the same but significant modifications might be made while operating over different joints.

It is a relatively short procedure and might take up to 1 hour in case of knee arthroscopy, after which you might be taken to a separate room to recover for a few hours before going home. You might be asked to follow the following steps after the procedure:

• Medications: as recommended by your doctor which might reduce pain and inflammation

• R.I.C.E which is an acronym for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. This will help the patient to get relief from pain and inflammation and has to be continued for a few days post-surgery.

• Protection: You might have to use temporary splints, slings or crutches to support and provide protection and comfort in case of knee arthroscopy

• Exercise: Your doctor may prescribe certain mild exercises, physical therapy, and rehabilitation that may help strengthen muscles and improve the function of joints.

It is, in most cases, a safe medical procedure, if performed by qualified experts, severe complications are very rare. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are several risks involved.

The following is a set of such complications that may be caused due to this procedure :

• Tissue or nerve damage: the placement and movement of instruments within the joint can damage the joint’s structures

• Infection: Any kind of surgery carries this risk with it

• Blood Clots are very rare. But in cases where procedure lasts more than an hour, it can increase the risk of blood clots in your lungs and legs

You must speak to your doctor about the possible risks and complications of this procedure. You must also discuss to what extent can this reduce your back pain. You must call your surgeon if you develop any of the following symptoms:

• Fever

• Pain (not subsiding with painkillers)

• Any form of drainage from the incision

• Redness or swelling around the site

• New numbness or tingling sensation in the affected area
