What happens during procedure
During a cholecystectomy, the patient is given an anesthesia drugs injection through a vein in his arms so that he is not awake during the surgery. Traditional Open Cholecystectomy - In this traditional surgery, the surgeon makes a 6 inches (15 centimeters) incision in the patient’s abdomen, below his ribs on his right side. To reveal the liver or gallbladder, the surgeon pulls back the muscle and tissues and then removes the gallstones from the respective organ. This type of surgery is also one to two hour-long after which the incision is sutured and the patient is taken to a recovery room.
Post-procedure guidelines
Once you are taken to the recovery area, the anesthetic drug would fade off and then the patient will be taken to a room to continue recovery. Recovery varies with the surgery procedure opted for, which is explained below:
In Laparoscopic Surgery: Patients are often able to go home the next day of their surgery after some time of rest. A night’s rest at the hospital is recommended by the doctors for observation. Normally, once the patient can eat, drink and talk without feeling any pain, they are discharged from the hospital. It takes about a week to fully recover.
