Most Liver cancer patients are treated with surgical resection and liver transplants. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), trans-arterial radioembolization (TARE), and trans-arterial chemoembolization (TARE) are used to treat situations that cannot be handled surgically (TACE). The majority of patients are given palliative and supportive care, and their lives are short. Chemotherapy is only given to a tiny percentage of liver cancer treatment patients.

Treatment for liver cancer is often specific to the type of cancer, its cancer stage and its location. One of the most common liver cancer, Hepatocellular carcinoma, is seen in individuals who are heavy alcoholics or are suffering from Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C. Liver cancer treatment expands from surgical intervention, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, to more advance options like targetted therapy, immunotherapy and hormonal therapy. In some cases, chemotherapy drugs can also be used directly on the liver.
