Dr. Ambrish Mithal

An iconic endocrinologist, Dr. Ambrish Mithal has rich experience of more than three decades. He has held several apex positions both in academia and corporate hospitals. His contribution to endocrinology, particularly diabetes, thyroid disorders and osteoporosis, is globally recognized. Dr. Ambrish Mithal is an Indian endocrinologist, diabetologist and the Chairman and Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes division. He was the first DM in Endocrinology from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (1987). Dr. Ambrish’s areas of research interest include diabetes and the heart, evaluation of new therapies for diabetes, vitamin D nutrition in Indians, and prevention of osteoporotic fractures. He has received the Springer Citation for his paper on ‘Global Vitamin D Status’. He was also recognized as the ‘Doctor of the Year’ by the Delhi Medical Association. His distinguished contribution in the field of medicine bagged him groundbreaking recognition in the Limca Book of Records. IOF Amgen Health Professionals Award ISBMR and the Boy Frame Award of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research are among the other awards he has to his credit. The Fogarty Fellowship from Harvard Medical School and the JICA Fellowship from Japan are the jewels that embellish his crown. Before joining Medanta, Dr. Ambrish Mithal served as a Senior Consultant of Endocrinology at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in New Delhi. He started his career as a consultant endocrinologist at Sanjay Gandhi PGI in Lucknow. He was the former President of the Endocrine Society of India. Currently, Dr. Ambrish Mithal is the Chairperson of Bone and Joint Decade, the Chief Advisor of the Indian Society for Bone and Mineral Research, and the Chairman of Nutrition Working Group of Committee of Scientific Advisors. He is also a prominent board member of the International Osteoporosis Foundation.
